I can’t be forced out of office, says Benue Speaker

MontelentOctober 24, 2016

Speaker of Benue State House of Assembly, Mr. Terkimbi Ikyange, has said he would not be forced out of office by agitations for the restoration of Mbagwa State constituency in Ushongo Local Government Area of the state.

Ikyange, who spoke at Tyotim, Ikyor council ward, following the National Assembly’s resolution directing the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to conduction elections in the suppressed constituency within 90 days, insisted that only an election petition tribunal or court could invalidate his mandate.

He maintained that he was not against the restoration of the suppressed constituencies, but added that the agitation should be in line with the provisions of the 1999 constitution.

He said: “As things stand at the moment and given the provisions of Section 68(c) of the 2010 Electoral Act as amended and Section 114 of 1999 Constitution, I remain the representative of the people till the end of my tenure.

“The constitution clearly stated that where the boundary of a constituency is altered after the approval by the National Assembly, any consequential action, such as conduct of election, can only be undertaken after the current life of the Assembly.

“This clearly implied that the resolution of the National Assembly had been ill-timed.”
